JANUARY 2022 NEWSLETTER

Our mission is to build a better and brighter future for all those impacted by Spina Bifida.

SBANT is focused on supporting our Spina Bifida community in many ways through Education, Advocacy, Reseach & Support.  This includes partnering with SBA, SBA chapters and other community organizations to bring as many opportunities as possible to our community.  We encourage you to get involved and see what opportunities are available below.

In Memory of Matt Morrison

We are saddened to announce that Matt Morrison passed away on December 27, 2021 at the age of 51.  Matt was the son of Gaye and Bill Morrison, who not only helped found the Spina Bifida Association of North Texas (then Dallas) in 1973, but who also helped found the national Spina Bifida Association.  Matt was an active member of SBANT in his youth and into his adulthood.  Our Camp TLC was founded because Gaye wanted for Matt and his friends to experience and enjoy a summer camp just like any other kid.  Matt had many health challenges later in life, but he didn't let them stop him from experiencing life to the fullest.  He had many friends who loved him and who will miss his sense of humor dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 29, 2022 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Garland VFW Post 5076, located at 2180 Meridian Way.  His obituary can be found here where you can leave messages for his family.

Our deepest sympathies to Matt's family and friends who loved and cared for him.  We will miss that smiling face.

SBANT Board of Directors

As the new year begins, we would like to say thank you to the individuals who are volunteering to serve on the SBANT Board of Directors.  We would also like to thank those who have served SBANT faithfully, some for a very long time, and who's terms of service have now come to an end.  This includes Maria Avitia, who served SBANT for over 30 years; Katherine Gresback, who served for 6 years; Sandy Hall, who served for 3 years; and Dr. Kristen Taylor, who served for 2 years.  We appreciate their support and dedication to serving our Spina Bifida community!

We would also like to welcome our new board members!

  • Dr. Blake Palmer, Pediatric Urologist
  • Amy Hensarling, SB Parent
  • Teresa Broadbent, SB Parent
  • Dr. Clarice Sinn, PM& R Physician and Adult Transition Clinic
  • Megan Williams, SB Adult
  • Katy Broadbent, SB Young Adult/Junior Board Member

We are still looking for someone to serve as Treasurer.  This is a position that needs someone with an Accounting/Finance background, but does not require too much of your time.  If you have questions, Elaine would be glad to speak with you.  Email Robin for contact info.

SBANT Scholarship Recipients

SBANT's Educational Scholarship fund supports our individuals who wish to attend secondary education or trade school.  The application for the 2022-23 school year will be available on our website January 31st and will be included in the February newsletter.  Our wish is to help them succeed and support them as they pursue their goals.  Your donations to the scholarship fund helped several individuals last year, including Chelsea and Brandi.  They are thriving and making their way with your support.  Chelsea is participating in wheelchair track at the University of Arizona and won her first marathon in Honolulu last month!  Brandi is getting settled at Dallas Baptist University, has joined a sorority and is enjoying Greek life!  Congratulations to both these young ladies.  They are thankful for the support of SBANT.

Dallas Jr Wheelchair Mavericks
